101 - When you can’t think from scratch

This episode came from an experience I didn’t expect to become an episode at all.

I had planned to record for my usual Monday release, but by Sunday evening, I was exhausted. When Cliff asked what I wanted to talk about, I had absolutely nothing. Even when he asked me questions I would normally have no trouble answering, I simply couldn’t access the answers.

It wasn’t that I had nothing to say.

I was just too tired to reach what I already knew.

That experience got me thinking about how often we expect ourselves to create clarity, make decisions, follow through, and solve problems from scratch when we are already exhausted, overwhelmed, or carrying too much mental load.

Sometimes what we call inconsistency may actually be unsupported capacity.

In this episode, I talk about what I’m learning about creating more structure and support for my future self—not rigid systems that take away creativity or intuition, but simple trails I can leave behind when my mind is clear so I don’t have to figure everything out again when I’m tired.

I explore questions like:

  • Where am I expecting myself to generate clarity from scratch?
  • Where do I keep blaming myself for not following through?
  • Where would a small amount of preparation make the next step kinder?
  • Where am I calling myself uncommitted when I may actually be unsupported?

This applies to so much more than podcasting.

It can show up in meal planning, creative work, cleaning, exercise, prayer and reflection, business building, hard conversations, asking for help, and even making everyday decisions when the mental load becomes too heavy.

Maybe the problem isn’t that we keep failing.

Maybe the system keeps asking too much of our most tired self.

I’m learning to pay attention to when I have my best energy, protect it when I can, and prepare for the times when my energy simply isn’t there.

So I want to invite you to choose one area of your life where you’re tired of having to think from scratch.

You don’t need to overhaul everything or create the perfect system.

Just leave yourself a little trail.

A note.

A list.

A next step.

A few bullet points.

A reminder of what mattered when your mind was clear.

We are not weak because we need support. We are not less intuitive because we need structure. And sometimes one of the most loving things we can do for our future self is leave her a trail she can follow when she’s tired.

I’d Love to Hear From You
